Enhanced Athletics Facilities: With the recent refurbishment of the Athletics Track, completed in June 2022, the PE Department is excited to offer improved training experiences and host future athletic events. This upgraded facility will support our athletes as they prepare for competitive meets and events.

Upcoming Competitions and Tournaments: Building on this year’s successes, the department is preparing for a variety of national and international competitions. These events will provide our students with invaluable opportunities to showcase their skills, represent the school, and gain experience in competitive sports environments.

Community Engagement and Events: The PE Department is also exploring new community engagement activities in partnership with local organizations, allowing students to participate in sports events beyond the school. Physical Education Department Achievements Report 2023-2024
Introduction The Physical Education (PE) Department at The English School had an outstanding year, focusing on promoting fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork among students. The department organized various activities, competitive events, and maintained a robust curriculum aimed at fostering athletic excellence and holistic student development. Here, we highlight the significant achievements and accomplishments of our department and student-athletes during the 2023-2024 academic year.
Team Achievements
- Swimming: Our U-15 Swimming Team secured 2nd place in the Pancyprian Private Schools Swimming Competition, showcasing their skill and dedication in a highly competitive field.
- Basketball: The Senior Boys Team earned 3rd place in the Pancyprian Schools Competition, while the Junior Boys, Junior Girls, and Senior Girls Teams all placed in the top four in the Nicosia Schools Competition.
- Volleyball: The Junior Boys Volleyball Team achieved 2nd place in the Nicosia Schools Competition and advanced to the Quarter-Final stage in the Pancyprian Competition.
- Football: The U-15 Girls Football Team participated in the Cyprus Football Association Pancyprian Championship, securing 5th place at the Ayia Napa Youth Soccer Festival and winning the Fair Play Award for the second consecutive year.
Individual Achievements
- Deanna Peng: 1st place in Senior Girls Table Tennis (Pancyprian Competitions).
- Melina Kyriaki Beka: 1st place in Senior Girls 100m Breaststroke, represented The English School and Cyprus at the World Student Games, achieving 4th place in the 100m Breaststroke, 5th place in the 50m Breaststroke, and 6th place in the 4x100m Mixed Medley Relay.
- Alexandros Middleton: 1st place in Junior Boys 300m Hurdles.
- Efthymia Stylianidou: 1st place in U-15 Girls 50m Backstroke (Pancyprian Private Schools Swimming Competition).

School and House Competitions
- Inter-House Competitions: A total of 47 competitions were held, allowing students to represent their Houses in various sports. Newham emerged as the champion in the Boys' category, while Wolseley triumphed in the Girls' category.
- Founder’s Day Sports Events: Celebrated with enthusiasm, featuring sports like football, basketball, hockey, tennis, and korfball. The highlight was the traditional Staff vs. Students Volleyball Match, which ended in a tie.
- Inter-House Cross Country and Athletics Competitions: These competitions were key events during Sports Week, culminating in an exciting Sports Day.
Community Engagement and Events
- Running Club: Members participated in the Quantum Nicosia Marathon, the OPAP Limassol Marathon, and the Ministry of Education’s annual Health Run in Larnaca.
- Parade Team: Displayed commendable performances in the 28th October and 25th March school parades in Nicosia.
- Hockey Week: Enhanced by a friendly match against ESOBGA, as part of the Salakian Hockey Trophy events.

Held on 1st February 2023 at Archiepiscopou Makariou III Gymnasium, Platy, our students excelled in the Pancyprian Badminton Competition.- Nicolas Maroudias won gold in the Junior Boys category with a final score of 2-0.
- Efie Zanou earned silver in the Junior Girls category, reaching the final and narrowly missing the top spot.
- Other participants included Andreas Papandreou, Demetris Iasonos, Mariza Zembyla, Georgios Pouyioutas, and Paris Sokratous.

Cyprus U17 & Youth International Badminton Tournament (15-18 December)
This international tournament attracted over 180 athletes from ten countries.- Panayiotis Adamou (Year 4): 3rd place in Singles U17.

- Nicolas Maroudias (Year 3): 1st place in Mixed Doubles U15, 2nd place in Singles U15.

Quantum Nicosia Marathon (11th December 2022)
Twenty-seven students, alongside seven staff members, participated in the marathon. Philip Georghiades coordinated the event, and participants successfully achieved personal bests in the 5K and 7.7-mile races. -
Special Olympics Day Floorball Matches (2nd December 2022)
In partnership with the Parimatch Foundation, our team participated in the Special Olympics event, fostering inclusivity and sportsmanship. They presented T-shirts to students from the School for the Deaf, highlighting the spirit of camaraderie.

Exciting news from the Pancyprian Badminton Competition held on February 1st! Our talented athletes from various schools across the island put their skills to the test and made us proud. Nicolas Maroudias took home the gold in the junior boys category, and Efie Zanou brought home a silver in the junior girls category.
Efie's impressive performance even brought her to the final, although she lost the tie break set 21-15 with a final score of 2-1. On the other hand, Nicolas dominated the final with a final score of 2-0, emerging as the junior school champion for 2023. Congratulations to all the participants, including Andreas Papandreou, Demetris Iasonos, Mariza Zembyla, Georgios Pouyioutas, and Paris Sokratous, on their hard work and determination paying off. On Sunday, December 11th, the Running Club and PE Department of the English School participated in the Quantum Nicosia Marathon. A total of 27 students participated in the event, with 26 students running the 5K race and 1 student participating in the 7.7-mile race.
They were joined by 7 staff members, with 2 competing in the 5K race and 5 running in the 7.7-mile race. The weather was nearly perfect for the event, and many of the participants were able to improve their personal best times. The participation of the students and staff was coordinated by Philip Georghiades, and we would like to extend our thanks to him for his efforts. Congratulations to all the participants on their successful race! |
On Friday, 2nd December, The English School was honoured to be invited to participate in the Special Olympics Floorball Event, organized by the Parimatch Foundation. In addition to our own students, the tournament featured teams from the School for the Deaf and the Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation, all coming together to showcase the values of equality and inclusivity through the exciting sport of Floorball. Our team represented The English School with distinction, not only on the field but also in their gracious gestures of presenting T-shirts to the students of the School for the Deaf that participated in the event. It was a truly memorable experience for all involved, as our students had the opportunity to bond with their peers through the joy of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Friday, 9th December, Our school participated in the Nicosia Cross Country competitions at Lyceum Koutsofta Panayide Paliometoxo. Both the Junior and the Senior teams did well.

Amongst them are three English School students: Christos Ashiotis, ESL 2022, Christos Economides, Year 6 and Andrea Ioanna Georgiou, Year 5. It was an intense match, with us winning the 1st set 25-20. We lost the 2nd round 18-25 and won the 3rd set at 15-12. CFA Championship Group A The English School Vs OMONOIA FC Score: ES: 4 OMONOIA FC: 0 The first official match was held on Saturday, 5th November during the English School BBQ part of the Founder’s Day games. It was a fantastic match. From the first minute, our team pushed forward and pressed our opponent. We scored the first three goals in the first half and another in the second half. Our defence was perfect, as were the efforts of our goalkeeper! Our midfield and attack players played a very strategic game, creating opportunities for us to score our four goals against OMONOIA. This is a positive start for our team. The girls showed that they were capable and committed. We will continue to work hard and do our best to keep improving. |

Our Parade Team represented the English School in the 28th October Schools Parade in the centre of Nicosia. The team consisted of 56 students who practised intensively and worked hard in the preceding weeks. They showed exceptional organisation, synchronisation and marching style and were proud ambassadors of our School. Congratulations to all! | Participation in this event came with a very good result. We won in total 3 medals (1 Gold,1 Silver and 1 Bronze. Andreas Kelesis won the Gold in the category 'Youth A (1200m-200m-1200m)'. Stephie Dracou came 3rd, and Maria Nearchou came 2nd in the category 'Youth D (400m-100m-400m)'. In total, our School won 3rd place in the Pancyprian Biathlon Competition. Great work, everybody! |

They will also be working on their strength and conditioning with Alexandros Solomonides, our Gym Instructor, making use of the availability of the Gym from 6.00-7.30 before school. The Senior Boys' Basketball Team will participate in the Ministry of Education Competition, which will start in November. |

Our first Afternoon Games session for Year 1 Girls was on Friday 4th, October 2022. The girls had the chance to meet their Heads of House, discuss their sporting interests and plan the year. The Heads of House briefly introduced the Competitive and Recreational opportunities that will be available this year. The programme of the day included basketball and futsal, with Newham playing friendly matches against Wolseley and Beaconsfield facing Kitchener. The girls participated with lots of enthusiasm with their friends, showcasing their sporting skills and abilities. The Heads of House closely observed and made notes so that they can prepare their House Teams for the Inter-House Competitions that will start next week. It was great to see so much energy and talent on display! |
We had our first Afternoon Games session of the year on Thursday, 13th October 2022, with Year 1 Boys attending. It was a great opportunity for our young athletes to meet with their Heads of House and participate in sports with their friends. The programme included futsal and basketball, with Beaconsfield playing friendly matches against Kitchener and Newham facing Wolseley. The Heads of House were impressed by the standard that they witnessed, and it was pleasing to see our Year 1 boys enjoying themselves. |

The Cyprus U17 & Youth International badminton tournament was held in Nicosia between 15-18 December and was attended by 180 athletes from over ten countries.
