Welcome to Sports and Afternoon Games

At The English School, sports have always been a core part of our legacy, inspiring students to achieve their best both on and off the field. Our Physical Education Department is dedicated to building on this legacy, with a vision “to aim for excellence and stand out as the premier PE department in Cyprus.” We are committed to fostering a love for fitness, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness among our students.

Our Vision and Ethos

The PE Department strives for excellence in teaching and learning through morning Physical Education lessons that build fitness, develop sporting skills, and instill respect, fair play, and effort. In line with our Founder’s philosophy, we offer a variety of opportunities for students to engage in sports. Our Afternoon Games provide numerous physical recreation options, allowing competitive students to represent their House in Inter-House Competitions. Those with advanced skills have the chance to join our school teams and compete against other schools and sports clubs.

Community Engagement and Competitive Spirit

We encourage active participation in the wider community through events organized by the Ministry of Education, Nicosia Private Schools, Cyprus Sports Federations, and Strovolos Municipality. Students also have the opportunity to participate in friendly matches with the ESOBGA sports teams, in events like the Founder’s Day Games and the Salakian Hockey Tournament.

Afternoon Games

Afternoon Games is one of the long-standing traditions of The English School aiming to provide further sporting opportunities to our students within our House system. They participate in various sports activities with younger and older boys and girls under the guidance of their Head of House.  Students are exposed to a wide range of sports and are supervised by the members of the PE Department and our Specialist Afternoon Games Coaches.  They have the opportunity to participate competitively in school sports when they are selected to represent their House, and they also have the chance to develop into leaders, captaining their peers.  Those who prefer a more relaxed, social and fun approach to sports may participate in non-competitive physical recreation activities, through which they can strengthen their friendships and improve their fitness.

Facility Development and Modernization

To support our vision, we continue to invest in modernizing our facilities:

  • 2018: Complete renovation of the multi-use Sports Centre, with new changing rooms.
  • 2019: Opening of a state-of-the-art weights room.
  • 2020: Introduction of a Tennis Centre with five new tennis courts.
  • 2021: Renovation of the Main Football Pitch, installation of a new artificial grass surface, and the addition of two new outdoor basketball courts.
  • 2022: Refurbishment of the Athletics Track.

With each improvement, we aim to enhance our students’ sports experience, providing top-quality facilities that inspire them to get fitter, healthier, make friends, and strive for success.

Commitment to Excellence and Enjoyment

In everything we do, our goal is to foster a positive sporting environment where students are encouraged to enjoy themselves, embrace a healthy lifestyle, and do their best. We are here to support every student, whether they are aspiring athletes or simply looking to stay active and make memories. Welcome to our PE Department, where every student is inspired to be their best!
