This consists of TWO components:
Qualification at a glance
The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Subsidiary GCE in English Literature consists of two externally examined papers. This qualification requires the study of four literary texts.
Students must complete all assessment in May/June in any single year.

Overview of content Students study: ● a selection of specified poetry from a post-2000 text ● one chosen drama from a prescribed list (either tragedy or comedy). |

Overview of assessment ● Written examination, lasting 2 hours. ● Open book – clean copies of the texts can be taken into the examination. ● Total of 72 marks available – 24 marks for Section A and 48 marks for Section B. ● Two sections: students answer one question from a choice of two on their studied poetry collection in Section A and one question from a choice of two on their studied drama text in Section B. ● Section A – one comparative essay question on a named poem from the studied text, plus a free choice of second poem from the selected list. Students will draw on their knowledge of poetic form, language, and conventions (AO1, AO2, AO4 assessed). ● Section B – Drama: one essay question (AO1, AO2, AO3, AO5 assessed). |

English Literature A2- Seventh Form Syllabus
This consists of TWO units:
Unit 3: Interpretations of Prose and Poetry
External examination 2 hours and 45 minutes: (100 marks 60% of total A2 grade)
Clean copies of the prescribed examination texts must be used in the examination
Section A: Unprepared poetry or prose
Students will choose to answer one extended essay question on EITHER an unprepared poem OR a piece of prose. Skills in demonstrating detailed critical understanding, evaluating the writer’s techniques and giving their opinion about their effectiveness will be assessed.
40 markswill be available for this answer.
Section B: Analytical essay
Students are required to study three prescribed texts. They will be presented with a reader’s comment and will write about their response to the texts in the light of this comment, referring to at least two of the texts they have studied.
60 markswill be available for this answer.

Unit 4: Reflections in Literary Studies
Coursework Folder: 2500-3000 words maximum (including quotations) 80 marks: 40% of A2 grade
This unit allows students and teachers free choice of texts in order to undertake independent reading and research. Students study three connected texts to produce a coursework folder which demonstrates that the four assessment objectives have been met. Tasks enable students to make informed analytical responses, showing critical awareness of the connections and comparisons between texts.
Core text: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard
Secondary texts have included Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett and The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock by T.S.Eliot
