What Kind of School is The English School?

What Are Our Aims?

What is Our Ethos?

These profound questions lie at the heart of any great school. Yet, it’s difficult to encapsulate such intangible qualities in mere words.

We hope, however, to provide a glimpse of who we are and what we stand for. As Sir Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral, once said:
“Si monumentum requiris, circumspice”“If you seek a monument, look around you.”

This sentiment applies to schools as well. To truly understand The English School, you must experience it firsthand—its culture, its vibrancy, and its ethos. We warmly invite you to visit us and witness the spirit of our school in action. Until then, here’s a brief introduction to what makes The English School unique.

An Introduction to The English School

The English School is a co-educational, fee-paying day school that primarily serves Cypriot students. Our rigorous curriculum follows the IGCSE and A Level framework, and all instruction is delivered in English. Entry at age 12 is highly competitive, and many of our graduates progress to top universities, particularly in the UK. Each year, between five and ten students are admitted to Oxbridge or medical schools.

Our Head’s membership in the UK Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference positions us among an elite group of British and British-style schools, yet our community is distinctly Cypriot.

While the majority of our students are Greek Cypriots, our school celebrates diversity. Since 2003, Turkish Cypriot students have been an integral part of our community, and we also welcome students from Armenian, Maronite, and mixed-nationality backgrounds. This multicultural dynamic reflects the island’s rich heritage and fosters an inclusive, vibrant environment.

Although we primarily prepare students for UK universities, many also pursue higher education in the USA and across Europe, reflecting our global outlook.

Our Academic Ethos and Extracurricular Culture

We are academically selective and committed to excellence, but we also strive to support students with diverse learning needs. This ethos is evident in our graduates' success at leading universities worldwide, particularly those in the Russell Group.

Our school combines the traditions of a British independent school with Cypriot cultural values. The English School is proud to blend the best of both worlds, fostering a sense of academic rigour, community, and balanced growth.

Beyond Academics

While academic achievement is central to our mission, we are equally committed to the holistic development of every student. Our extensive extracurricular program provides opportunities for students to discover their passions and develop vital life skills.

  • Sports: From competitive teams to recreational opportunities, sports play a significant role in fostering teamwork, discipline, and physical health.
  • Music and Choir: Our music program inspires creativity and features a renowned choir that allows students to showcase their talents.
  • Drama and Model United Nations: With an active drama department and a highly regarded MUN program, students build confidence, collaboration, and a global perspective.
  • Debating and Charity Events: Students develop leadership, empathy, and social responsibility through debating societies and numerous charity initiatives.
