Our School Nurse
The health and well-being of our students is a top priority at The English School. Our fully qualified Registered Nurse, Ms. Despina Giannikouri (RN), is on-site throughout the school day to provide professional medical care and support to our school community. In addition, a team of trained First Aiders ensures that immediate assistance is available when required.
Role of the School Nurse
The School Nurse plays a pivotal role in ensuring the overall health and safety of students, staff, and visitors. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing first aid and medical assistance for minor injuries and illnesses.
- Assessing more serious medical conditions and coordinating with parents/guardians for further treatment or hospital visits.
- Administered prescribed medication in line with school policy and maintained accurate medical records.
- Supporting students with chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, and allergies.
- Coordinating the school's vaccination programme and promoting health education initiatives.
When to Visit the School Nurse
Students can visit the Medical Room if they:
- Feel unwell during the school day.
- Experience an accident on campus.
- Require assistance with managing a medical condition.
- Have specific health concerns that need immediate attention.
The School Nurse will assess the situation, provide the necessary care, and determine whether the student can return to class, requires further medical treatment, or needs to go home.

First Aid Support
The School Nurse is supported by a team of qualified First Aiders who are trained in:
- Basic First Aid at Work.
- Using the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
Portable First Aid kits are available across campus, and First Aiders are present during school events and off-site activities to provide immediate assistance when needed.
Health and Safety
The Medical Room is a fully equipped, secure space where all medical supplies, student health records, and prescribed medications are safely stored. The school adheres to Ministry of Education regulations for maintaining a healthy environment and ensures all staff are familiar with:
- Emergency procedures and when to summon first aid assistance.
- Locations of AEDs and First Aid kits throughout the school.
Additional Support
The School Nurse works closely with staff and parents to ensure students with special medical needs or disabilities receive appropriate care and accommodations. Information and guidance are shared with teachers to support students' health in the classroom.
Trips and Activities
To ensure the safety of students during trips and extracurricular activities:
- At least one First Aider accompanies all off-site trips with a travel First Aid kit.
- Trip leaders are required to inform the School Nurse in advance about specific health needs or required support for participants.
Emergencies
In the event of an emergency, the School Nurse coordinates with parents/guardians and medical professionals. The school follows a strict protocol for contacting emergency services (112) when required.
