School Counselling at The English School

At The English School, we understand that students face various challenges as they grow and develop. These challenges may arise from school, social, or family contexts and can include stress, bullying, bereavement, managing relationships, or navigating emotional and behavioural concerns. Our School Counselling Service is here to provide a safe and supportive space for students to explore these challenges and find ways to overcome them.

What We Offer

Our full-time, professionally qualified School Counsellor specializes in Counselling Psychology and is experienced in supporting young people through various difficulties, including:

  • Coping with academic stress and workload.
  • Managing emotions such as anger, anxiety, or sadness.
  • Addressing bullying and building healthy relationships.
  • Coping with bereavement, loss, or family changes.
  • Developing self-confidence and making positive life choices.

How the Service Works

  • Drop-In Sessions: Students can voluntarily drop in during break times for immediate support.
  • Scheduled Appointments: Students may attend sessions of up to 45 minutes as needed, with a focus on confidentiality and tailored support.
  • Referrals: Form Tutors, subject teachers, Heads of Department, or Heads of Year can refer students for counselling if they believe additional support is needed.
  • Parental Involvement: Parents or guardians may also seek counselling for their children, with consent required for students under 18.

Confidentiality

Counselling sessions take place in a secure and private space within the school. Confidentiality is fundamental to the counselling process and is only breached if there are child protection concerns or significant welfare risks. The School Counsellor works closely with parents/guardians to ensure every child’s well-being remains a priority.

When External Support Is Needed

While our School Counselling Service provides valuable short-term support, students requiring long-term psychological care or specialized interventions may be referred to external professionals. The Counsellor will guide families in identifying the best resources for continued care.

Contacting the School Counselling Service

Students, parents, and staff can contact the School Counsellor directly for support. To schedule a session or for further information, please email Maria.Papachristodoulou@englishschool.ac.cy

Together, we aim to nurture resilience, self-awareness, and emotional well-being in every member of our school community.
