1st Year - Greek Syllabus
The Greek Diagnostic Test
Students who enter the school in Year 1 based on their results in English and Maths Exams follow a similar syllabus to the Greek mainstream but at a different pace. To assess their Greek language background and be able to allocate them into groups, these students are asked to sit the Greek diagnostic test. This test is similar to the Greek Entrance exam, and it includes a continuous writing task, a text for understanding and comprehension, and tasks related to language usage.
The Greek Department aims to offer continuous support to these students and evaluates their progress throughout the academic year. At the end of each academic year, a panel of teachers, the Head of the Department, the Coordinator of teaching Greek as a Second/Foreign Language and a Senior teacher meet to assess the individual progress of students and decide whether they can be promoted to the mainstream class or should remain in their group for further development. The School policy about teaching Greek as a second/foreign language is provided to the students and their parents along with the diagnostic test results.
Mid-Programme entry students who enter the School based on their results in English and Math Exams must also take the Greek Mid-Programme entry diagnostic test to assess their proficiency and place them in the most appropriate group. They will be placed either in the Greek mainstream or in one of the Non- Native speakers groups.
We should clarify that there are usually two groups of Non-Native speaker students for each year group, one for the more advanced and one for the less advanced students. At the end of each academic year, the progress of these students is evaluated, and the same policy as mentioned above is followed. The teachers, the Coordinator of Teaching Greek as a Second/Foreign language, or the Head of the Department contact the parents regularly to monitor the student’s progress. The external exams that Non-Native speakers take vary according to their level of achievement.
