Erasmus+ Mobility hosting Ahaus, Germany 15-20 Jan 2023

The German students aimed to experience Cyprus culture and lifestyle. The first day of our week, Monday 15th January, was quite busy! We started off with a tour of our school, followed by team building activities to get to know each other. We continued with the Greek café activity, during which we taught our guests everyday phrases in Greek and made short videos of our dialogues. We played Cyprus traditional games (mandili, sakkoulodromies, ziziros) at the school’s sports centre, and we found out that in Germany, there are remarkably similar traditional games to our very own ‘mandili’ and ‘sakoulodromies’. We shared traditional Cyprus recipes and treated our guests to Cyprus food products. Finally, we sang the traditional Cyprus song ‘To Yasemin'.

On Tuesday, 16th January, we had an excursion to the Limassol district. We visited Aphrodite’s birthplace ‘Petra tou Romiou’ and the Kourion Archaeological site, one of the island’s most significant city- kingdoms in antiquity. We saw the beautiful mosaics at the ‘House of Eustolios’ and the magnificent amphitheatre. We enjoyed the sunshine while walking around the luxurious yachts and villas at the Limassol Marina. In the evening, we attended a Cyprus folk dance workshop at Politistiko Ergastiri Ayion Omologiton, during which Mr Panagiotis Theodorou and Mrs Christiana Papadopoulou presented the results of years of research on the key features of Cyprus folk dances e.g. they are danced in pairs who improvise the steps on the spot. The highlight of the evening was that we were actively engaged in the workshop while learning the steps of Syrtos.

On Wednesday, 17th January, our guests visited the ‘Ergastiri Ayion Omologiton’, and Mr Panagiotis Theodorou described the characteristics of Cyprus' traditional architecture. A meeting with the German Ambassador at the German Embassy in Nicosia followed that. The ambassador explained to the students Germany’s contribution to the European Union and facilitated activities between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to get together. Upon return to the English School, we played a game in which students had to match images of well-known landmarks of Cyprus with their names and description. These included the Venetian walls of Nicosia, castles, orthodox churches, the Hala Sultan Tekke, Venetian bridges, the Ayia Napa sculpture parks, well-known beaches, traditional villages at Troodos Mountain and much more.

On Thursday, 19th January, we had a tour of the Levention Municipal Museum and discovered interesting facts about the history of Nicosia and its multicultural character. We went on a treasure hunt in the city centre and relaxed while having a coffee on Ledras Street. In the evening, we had our party at the school hall and introduced our guests to Greek dances.

On Friday, 20th January, German students attended lessons at our school to get a glimpse of school life at our school. It is always sad when time comes to say goodbye, but we look forward to getting back together in a few weeks for more cultural adventures in Germany.

The Petros Markou Bursary

This bursary will provide financial assistance to students who demonstrate a strong commitment to their studies and a passion for learning.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Emilios for his generosity and support of our School and its students.

Note from benefactor
I am writing to share with you my decision to offer a bursary in memory of my late father Petros Markou.

My father was a proud alumnus of The English School, and his education there played a pivotal role in shaping the person he became. He went on to have a successful career and touch the lives of so many people in a positive way. He always spoke highly of the education and experiences he gained during his time at the School.

In his memory, I have decided to offer a bursary to current students of The English School. I believe that providing financial support to young people who are pursuing their education can make a lasting impact, just as my father's education did for him.

The bursary will be available to students who demonstrate financial need, academic excellence, and a commitment to community service. I hope that this bursary will help ease the financial burden for these students and allow them to fully focus on their studies.

I am honoured to give back to the School that played such a significant role in my father's life and to continue his legacy of making a positive impact on those around him.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about my initiative.

Emilios Markou

MEDIMUN 2023

This year's theme, "Building Resilience," will focus on finding innovative solutions to global conflicts and vulnerabilities through debates and Model UN resolutions.

The 18th Annual MediMUN will take place at the University of Nicosia, despite the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic. A dedicated group of students and teachers from The English School have worked hard to make the conference a reality.

Renowned speakers will be in attendance, including the Representative of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Mr. Colin Stewart, the Netherlands Ambassador, Elke Merks-Schaapveld, and the keynote speaker, the Representative of the European Parliament in Cyprus, Myrto Zambarta. Your presence at the opening ceremony (Friday, February 3rd, 12:00-13:00) and closing ceremony (Saturday, February 4th, 17:00-18:00) would be a valuable show of international support for the participating students and MediMUN.

This year's MediMUN leaders include George Nicolaou as Secretary-General, Maria Thanassa as President of the General Assembly, and Lambros Hadjigavriel as Deputy Secretary-General.

The MediMUN conference provides a unique opportunity for young leaders to come together and address pressing global issues. Through constructive debate and the formulation of Model UN resolutions, delegates will have the chance to showcase their critical thinking skills and demonstrate their commitment to positively impacting the world.

Attending the MediMUN conference is a valuable opportunity to observe the next generation of leaders in action and to show your support for their efforts. We invite you to join us for an inspiring and educational experience that highlights the power of collaboration and the importance of global resilience.

Stay tuned.

Arts Club Offers Exciting Opportunities for Lower School Students

Our goal is to provide students with a supportive and encouraging environment where they can develop their artistic skills and express themselves through various mediums.

Last month, students had the opportunity to participate in Lino Printing workshops. They explored the world of Lino carving and printing and created unique Tote bags for the Christmas Market Fundraiser. These workshops provide students with an opportunity to showcase their artistic talent but also help them develop valuable skills such as patience, precision, and problem-solving.

The Arts Club is a space where students can be inspired, express themselves, and create meaningful works of art. We encourage all Lower School students to join us and participate in this exciting and creative community.

Please contact our art department for more information about the Arts Club and upcoming events.

Unleashing Creativity with Ease!

With Olga's expert guidance and personal experience studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, our students were able to delve into the art of songwriting and learn essential techniques for composing their own original tunes.

The workshop provided a true musical journey as students explored melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic writing and composed on the spot. In addition to the hands-on learning experience, our students also had the opportunity to hear about the amazing programs offered at Berklee and ask Olga about her experiences there.

We extend a huge thank you to Olga for sharing her passion for songwriting and igniting the creativity of our young musicians. This workshop was a true inspiration and a testament to the limitless possibilities of what can be achieved with dedication and hard work.
