The English School, Nicosia
A Historical Account
1900–1960
The book contains a wealth of interesting and original information, as well as many old photographs re ecting the events of the
period in detail: Canon Newham’s e orts and devotion; the teaching sta ; sports and other activities at the School; the di erent
sites and premises of the School (from Victoria Road, where it rst started, to Wolseley Barracks, as well as its wartime ight to
Kyrenia, to its present magni cent site on ‘Snake Hill’, opposite Government House - today’s Presidential Palace); the Boarding
Houses and, above all, its students of di erent nationalities enjoying school life.
A unique and useful chronology of the School appears at the beginning of the book, highlighting all the salient events and
features, for easy reading. The personalities associated with the School have been included and even ‘Skiboo’ the School dog has
a place in the book, as he did in School life.
Sports, in particular, above all the ‘Games’ and athletic contests against the American Academy of Larnaca, were always a great
attraction, not only for the two schools but also for eminent visitors, including invariably the Island’s Governors and high o cials:
Goold-Adams, Storrs, Palmer, Harding, to name a few, as well as royalty like the Queen of Romania and the Princess-Royal. Other
names closely associated with the School include Demetris Libertis, Rauf Denktash, Panos Ioannou, Vahan Bedelian, Nedjat Bey,
Michalakis Karaolis, Alex Efthyvoulou and a multitude of famous alumni.
This is the rst book to be published containing a full history of The English School, over 365 pages long, hard bound and well
presented in high-quality paper and design. It is well worth reading and recommended to all who are interested in the School
18 and historical events on the island of Cyprus. An eminent academic in the U.S.A., an Old Boy himself, wrote to the author: I just
nished reading it and I hasten to send you a few words of thanks and congratulations for undertaking and completing so
successfully this wonderful project. Your book will be an important reference work
for many years to come, to the educational, cultural and social
