David Anastasios Middleton Pedonomou, a 14-year-old student from Nicosia, continues to make a name for himself in athletics through his achievements in the triple jump.

At the Matsia Athletics Meeting, held at the GSP Stadium from 15–17 May, David earned 3rd place, demonstrating his talent and determination against strong competition. He also achieved 3rd place in the U20 Championships held at Tsirion Stadium in Limassol on 22–23 May, competing successfully against athletes older than himself.

David recorded a personal best jump of 13.06 metres, demonstrating exceptional talent, dedication, and commitment to the sport. Through hard work, discipline, and consistent training, he continues to develop his abilities and pursue excellence in track and field.

His accomplishments bring pride to his school and community, and we congratulate him on his success. We wish David every success as he continues his athletic journey and works towards achieving even greater goals in the future.

The English School is pleased to recognise the achievements of its Upper School students in Chemistry and Physics competitions this year.

A group of Year 6 and Year 7 students took part in Round 1 of the UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO), a competition with more than 17,000 participants globally. Kyriakos Kantaris and Xinhui He achieved Gold awards, placing them among the top 8.5% of participants.

Further congratulations go to YouYou Tian and Nefeli Diaouri, who received Silver awards, and to Matthaios Ioannou and Christoforos Hadjinicolaou, who received Bronze awards. These results reflect the students’ strong subject knowledge, problem-solving ability, and willingness to engage with demanding scientific questions beyond the standard curriculum.

In Physics, ESL26 student Constantinos Christodoulides represented the school in the Pancyprian Physics Competition for final-year Lyceum students. After being selected in Phase A, he progressed to Phase B, where he achieved a Gold award. Constantinos will represent Cyprus this summer at the European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO) in Sweden and the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Colombia.

Year 6 students Peigi Song and YouYou Tian also took part in the Physics Bowl. YouYou received a Silver award, while Peigi achieved a Gold award. Their results placed The English School among the top ten schools in the region.

Term 2 was a busy and successful period for Middle School Science, with English School students taking part in five Science and STEM competitions.

Our first team, The Tidekeepers, represented the school in the 6th EU-Conexus International School Contest, “Think Smart, Create Green.” The team included Sophia Cagnetti, Giorgos Galatariotis, Nefeli Demetriades from Year 5 and Nadia Cagnetti from Year 3.

The students were asked to identify a sustainability issue affecting Cyprus, with a focus on coastal challenges, and propose a practical solution. Their project addressed climate change and coastal erosion through the development of the Poseidon Capsule, designed to support and enhance meadows of Poseidonia oceanica. The team presented their work to the jury and was awarded second place in the National Final.

Our second team, made up of Year 5 students Stavros Kouyialis, Konstantinos Trigkas, Giorgos Giovanni Hadjihannas, Lampros Skourides and Maximos Psalti, represented the school at the SCYence Fair with their project, “Small Filters, Big Impact: Tackling Microplastics in Water.”

Through their investigation, the students tested different filtration materials and measured their efficiency, cost, and reusability. Their project explored practical ways of reducing water pollution while combining scientific investigation, engineering design, and environmental awareness.

We also congratulate Year 5 student Zhibai Mark Huang, who achieved a National Gold Award, Division 1, in the 2026 AAPT PhysicsBowl.

Further success came from our Year 4 students, who are currently in the first year of their IGCSE Chemistry studies. Andreas Aristodemou and Ioannis Lambrou represented the school in the Pancyprian Chemistry Olympiad for A’ Lyceum students. Despite completing the examination in Greek, Andreas achieved the top mark in the Silver Award category, while Ioannis received a Bronze Award.

Congratulations are also due to George Lioudakis, who received a Silver Medal in the Pancyprian Physics Olympiad for A’ Lyceum students.

The English School congratulates its young scientists in Years 1 and 3 for their recent scientific projects and achievements.

On Thursday, 30 April 2026, a team of Year 1 students represented the school at the SCYence Fair, held at the Cyprus Institute. Theodore Kallis, Yuze Cao, Harry Kallis, Theodora Maria Elia and Efthyvoulos Iacovides presented their project on Moon Phases, explaining their work to visitors and sharing their understanding of this fascinating scientific topic.

Their presentation reflected confidence, curiosity and a clear interest in science. The students engaged well with those who visited their stand and represented the school with maturity and enthusiasm.

The school also congratulates the Year 3 students who took part in the class project “How to Survive on a Desert Island.” The project encouraged students to think creatively and apply scientific reasoning to a survival scenario. The best projects were recognised during a recent Year 3 assembly dedicated to celebrating student achievements.

Trophies were awarded to Siddarth Raja, Nephele Fatta, Stephanie Rose Georghiades, Elena Adoni, Ioannis Francisco Chatziiosif, Alessandra Coll Gabrielides and Harry Kallis for their excellent work and teamwork.

The English School achieved the highest number of gold medals and the highest total number of medals among the 50 public and private schools that participated in the competition. The result is particularly notable, as only 10% of participating students were awarded a medal, while The English School students achieved a 100% medal success rate.

The students’ performance reflects their strong preparation, disciplined study, and clear interest in economics. Their achievement also reflects the academic support provided by the Economics Department.

Special thanks are extended to Mr Tryfonas Hadjichristoforou and Mr Demetris Moiseos for their guidance, encouragement, and subject expertise in preparing the students for the competition.

The sixth and final edition of the Erasmus+ DataScEd4CiEn project newsletter is now available. This issue records the completion of the project and summarises the work of the international consortium on Data Science education within STEAM.

The newsletter includes the final consortium meeting hosted at European University Cyprus, multiplier events held in partner countries, dissemination and research activity, and classroom implementations of the project’s STEAM scenarios.

The English School contributed through classroom pilots, teacher professional development, dissemination activity and collaboration with partner institutions. The newsletter includes examples of students using authentic data to examine real-world issues through STEAM learning.

During the second term, all Year 3 students at The English School participated in the Erasmus+ DataScEd4CiEn STEAM project “Every Bite Counts: Tackling Food Waste Together”. The project used Data Science to examine the causes and consequences of food waste and to consider practical ways of reducing waste at home and in the wider community.

The learning scenario brought together PSHCE, Mathematics, Science, English, Design & Technology and Computer Science. Students analysed authentic datasets using CODAP, compared food waste patterns, explored composting and biogas production, and considered the environmental, social and economic effects of food waste.

Students then designed practical outcomes, including sustainable food packaging, QR-linked recipes using leftover ingredients, awareness videos, podcasts, presentations and a collaborative digital cookbook. The project linked data literacy with scientific enquiry, communication, design and responsible citizenship.

During the second term, all Year 2 students at The English School took part in the Erasmus+ DataScEd4CiEn STEAM project “What is the True Cost of Your Clothes?” The project asked students to examine the ethical, environmental and economic effects of the fast fashion industry through Data Science and interdisciplinary learning.

The scenario connected PSHCE, Mathematics, Science, English, Art, Design & Technology and Computer Science. Students analysed authentic datasets using CODAP, considered working conditions in garment production, examined textile waste and water use, and evaluated how consumer choices affect people and the environment.

Students also developed practical responses. They repaired, reused and upcycled textiles, produced awareness campaigns, and created digital presentations, websites, posters and short videos to communicate their findings. The project gave students a structured way to use data, evidence and design thinking to address a real-world issue.

The English School is pleased to congratulate Paris Christodoulides on his recent success at the 47th Panhellenic Music Competition “Philon” Awards, held in Athens.

Paris, a member of the First Violins of the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, was awarded 1st Prize with Distinction in Category B1 Strings, for musicians aged 13–14.

This achievement recognises Paris’s musical ability, discipline, and dedication to violin performance. It also reflects the careful guidance and support of his teacher, Antonis Bargilly, whose work has contributed to Paris’s continued development as a young musician.

The English School warmly congratulates Paris on this excellent result and wishes him continued success in his musical journey.
