Chairman’s
Message
The English School is now nearing the end of the second decade of its second centenary and proudly
maintains its place as the premier school in Cyprus. Parents continue to place their trust in our school,
and competition for places as seen in our recent entrance examinations remains high despite the
nancial diculties our country has experienced over the last few years.
Our school’s identity as a school of excellence and achievements, as well as its identity as a landmark
in Nicosia as an oasis of greenery and exceptional buildings both listed and modern, continues to be
acknowledged and appreciated by the community in general.
The Board of Management, with the rest of the English School family, is again proud this year of its
students’ outstanding achievements in their external examinations, excellent university placements,
and non-academic activities, which are far too many to mention individually. For this, the Board of
Management acknowledges that our students come to us with a high level of ability, but these results
could not be achieved without the excellent work of our sta, and the dedicated support of parents,
to whom we express our warmest thanks.
The Board of Management’s commitment to providing the standard of facilities expected by the School’s
community, has been demonstrated by the delivery last September of the rst phase of the Newham
04 Building, with the project being completed by the end of this year. A long-awaited overhaul of our
Sports Centre and its changing rooms has also been accomplished this year and the installation of
retracting seats allows more spectators to enjoy the various events. Improvements to our Futsal Pitches,
Tennis Courts and Athletics Track will also be undertaken soon and will reect the importance that our
school has always placed in its tradition of sports, in line with the vision of our Founder Canon Frank
Darvall Newham.
A further important change this year has been the arrival in April of our new Headmaster, Mr David
Lambon. We extend a warm welcome both to him and his family. We all look forward to close cooperation
with Mr Lambon who has 17 years of success as a Headmaster, each time taking his schools to a higher
level. We are condent that his considerable experience will be eectively applied at our school to
ensure the continuation and enhancement of its successes, both academically and non-academically.
This year we will be losing three long-serving and loyal members of sta. Mrs Dora Hassapopoulou,
Mrs Stavroulla Kapsou and Mrs Antigoni Kiliari are retiring. We extend to all 3, our thanks and appreciation
for their many years of devoted work and wish them a happy and contented retirement.
It is with great sadness that I feel I must mention the tragic loss this year of one of our most esteemed
and well-loved teachers, Mr George Hadjigeorgiou, who served the School faithfully for almost thirty
years. During this time Mr Hadjigeorgiou gained the trust and respect of sta, students and parents,
not only due to his excellent subject knowledge, but mostly due to his genuinely caring and generous
nature which was valued by all those who knew him. Our school is much the poorer for this untimely
loss and our deepest sympathy goes out to his loved ones and those of his wife.
I close by wishing all of our graduating students success and fulllment in their future lives and I know
that you will always feel privileged and proud to be able to say that you are a member of the English
School family. To all the students and sta joining us again in September, on behalf of the Board of
Management, I wish you all a happy and restful summer holiday.
Dr George Theocharides
Chairman of the Board of Management
