CMA Economic Adviser Inspires Students with Insightful Talk on Competition and Markets

On the 13th November 2025, The English School had the pleasure of welcoming Ms Jabbar, Economic Adviser at the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), for a highly engaging and thought-provoking presentation on the role of competition policy in supporting a dynamic economy.

Ms Jabbar delivered a clear and accessible overview of the CMA’s mission: promoting competition, innovation and productivity to support growth in the UK economy. She outlined how the CMA works to ensure that markets function fairly for consumers and businesses alike, highlighting the importance of effective regulation in maintaining trust and efficiency in the marketplace.

A particular strength of the session was its strong emphasis on real-world application. Rather than remaining at the level of abstract theory, Ms Jabbar drew on real case studies and current issues facing markets and businesses to show how rigorous economic analysis underpins the CMA’s decisions and policies. Students were able to see how concepts they encounter in the classroom—such as market power, consumer welfare and incentives—are used every day in regulatory investigations and policy design.

The presentation also offered an excellent introduction to how the CMA operates internally. Ms Jabbar explained the work of the Microeconomics Unit and how its research feeds into evidence-based policymaking, helping the organisation to understand emerging trends, evaluate the impact of interventions and design more effective regulatory tools. Her clear communication and enthusiasm made complex economic ideas approachable and relevant to all attendees, regardless of their prior knowledge of economics.

Overall, the evening was insightful, practical and highly engaging—a powerful demonstration of how economic analysis can make a tangible difference in the real world. We are very grateful to Ms Jabbar for sharing her expertise and for inspiring our students to think more deeply about the links between economic theory, regulation and everyday life.
