Exploring the Future: The Impact of AI on the World of Work
On Friday, 28th March 2025, the Economics Society hosted a highly engaging and thought-provoking lecture titled “The Impact of AI on the World of Work.” The event featured distinguished guest speaker Ms. Monica Odysseos, Head of the AI and Data Lab at Grant Thornton, whose expertise and passion for artificial intelligence captivated the audience.
Held in Room 15 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, the session welcomed students and staff eager to delve into the rapidly evolving world of AI. Ms. Odysseos delivered a clear and insightful overview of how artificial intelligence is revolutionising the workplace. She unpacked complex concepts such as machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, and automation, making them accessible and relevant to her audience.
Beyond the technicalities, Ms. Odysseos explored the profound implications of AI on industries, efficiency, and the very nature of job roles. She also addressed the ethical dilemmas posed by these emerging technologies, highlighting the importance of responsible innovation and balanced perspectives.
What truly brought the session to life were the real-world case studies she shared—examples of how businesses today are leveraging AI to enhance decision-making, streamline operations, and innovate at scale. These examples not only deepened understanding but also inspired students to critically reflect on how AI might shape their own futures in the workforce.
Ms. Odysseos’ lecture was more than just informative—it was inspiring. It sparked meaningful conversations about the intersection of technology, ethics, and employment, and left attendees with a greater appreciation of both the opportunities and challenges ahead.
