23rd January 2018
To: The English School Stakeholders,
Dear Staff, Parents, Students and Graduates,
We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. David Lambon (BSc, MEng, PGCE, PQH) as Headmaster of The English School from April 2018, a decision which was reached by the Board of Management after extensive consideration and deliberation to ensure the selection of the most suitable leader for our School. Mr. Lambon has been a Headmaster for 17 years and has considerable experience of leading schools across a wide variety of contexts in the U.K, Ireland and in Europe.
After completing grammar school in Northern Ireland, Mr. Lambon was sponsored by Shell to attend the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (U.M.I.S.T). He graduated in 1991 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Management. Further studies led to a degree in Mathematics and he followed this with the MBA in School Leadership and Management.
In his early career, Mr. Lambon taught Maths and Physics before taking his first leadership position in 2000. Between 2004 and 2011, he was Headmaster of St Mary's Grammar School, Magherafelt which became the highest achieving academic school in Northern Ireland under his leadership. Also, at this time St Mary's was awarded Specialist School Status for Science and Sport.
His next post was Principal of St Malachy's College Belfast, a grammar school for boys and one of the oldest schools in Ireland. It was the first school in Ireland and the UK to be awarded Specialist School for Music status.
From there Mr. Lambon took up the post of Headmaster of Ampleforth College, a prestigious and historic boarding school with many famed alumni. He was the first lay principal of this illustrious institution. During his time at Ampleforth Mr. Lambon successfully led the school to become a Teaching School - a model of good practice in teacher training and staff development. In 2016, in addition to his role at Ampleforth, Mr. Lambon was appointed as a National Leader for Education in England. This role saw him tasked with helping schools move from "Good to Outstanding". This required him to review all aspects of provision in schools from academic achievement to the quality of extra-curricular and pastoral provision and to ensure that the needs of the Gifted & Talented students were fully met within the classroom context.
Mr. Lambon has been School Director in St George's School, Munich from 2016. His main area of interest in Germany has been the design and construction of a new school building and developing collaborative teaching methods for the delivery of the International Baccalaureate.
Across all his leadership positions, Mr. Lambon has led the schools to be classified as outstanding in Inspection reports.
The Board of Management looks forward to welcoming Mr. Lambon and cooperating with him to ensure the continuation of our School’s tradition of excellence in academic and other extracurricular fields. Mr. Lambon and his family are very much looking forward to life in Cyprus and becoming a part of the wider community. He sees his appointment as Headmaster of The English School as a privilege and appreciates the important role the school has played in Cypriot society.
Yours sincerely,
DR. GEORGE THEOCHARIDES
Chairman of the Board of Management
