On the 4th February 2016 at 5:30pm, The English School’s European Film Club organized the screening of the award-winning documentary film Sharing an Island, in the Lecture

Released in 2011 and directed by Danae Stylianou, Sharing an Island is set on our beautiful island. In the film, six young people who have never met—three Greek Cypriots who live south of the country’s buffer zone, and three Turkish Cypriots who live north of it—are invited to share a house for five days. Together they travel across their divided island, visiting various historic sights and debating different perspectives of the past.

Sharing an Island is a powerful and moving attempt to bridge two divided communities and celebrate their common humanity.

We are pleased to announce that we will be joined by one of the protagonists of the documentary (George) and a Representative from Future Worlds Centre who will be steering a discussion at the end of the screening.

The screening of Sharing an Island takes place courtesy of Future Worlds Centre’s European Film Club Project which our School is participating in as a pilot school.

Below are some photos from the evening.
The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students, staff and parents that attended. The discussion following the screening , with the protagonist of the film  Yiorgos Kaloyirou, was  interesting and thought-provoking  as was evidenced by the fact that it  ended one hour later than planned!

Thank you to all who attended and to Future Worlds Centre and ESPA for sponsoring the event.
