Learning, yet having fun at the Year 4 Geography Fieldtrip in Switzerland.

The Year 4 geography fieldtrip to Switzerland is an academic trip tailor made for IGCSE geography students. It is designed for the students to explore themes required for their IGCSE exams. On a daily basis hypotheses are set up and students embark on a route to enquiry of collecting data, analysis and presentation. They need to come to conclusions and evaluate their study during an evening session.

All of the above is done in the stunningly beautiful setting of the Valais region of the Swiss Alps. Glaciers, glaciated valleys, rivers and waterfalls mark the entire area. Students are able to make the link between the geography of the physical landscape and the geography of development and human habitation. The history urban growth, transport links and economic activity becomes so clear in the ethnic and cultural microcosm of Switzerland.

Some themes explored are water and hazard management and environmental quality assessment exercises. Sustainable development of tourism, energy and transport are also explored. Impacts of altitude on vegetation patterns and changes global warming will bring to these glaciated areas also become clear.

All in all students have a great time while learning and embedding concepts which are so easy to absorb through outdoor teaching. The best classroom for teaching geography is indeed outdoors!
