Our contribution to the Sophia Foundation for Children
Year 7 English School student, Zoe Kassinis, presents a cheque to the Sophia Foundation for Children, on behalf of English School students, which will be used to build a library for their orphanage in Nyeri, Kenya.
The total sum of €5708 was raised over the last four years as part of a student-led campaign called “Build a School in Africa”.
Funds were raised through a wide range of fund-raising activities organised by the Global Perspectives Class of 2013-2015 with the support of others, including The Economics Society and The Student Council. These activities included a number of Bake Sales , Film screenings, Bazaars, sponsored Zumba dance event and a Non Uniform Day. There will be a plaque placed in the Library when it is completed with the English School logo which will read “This library is donated by Students of the English School Nicosia Cyprus, 2016”.
We hope this will mark the beginning of future collaboration between our two institutions. The cheque was presented to the Sophia Foundation at an Assembly on the 12th October for Years 2 and 3 to commemorate Anti –Poverty Day, at the end of a very moving presentation by Ms. Shacolas.
In this presentation students had the opportunity to learn about children who are the victims of extreme poverty, abandonment and destitution, and how we can all play a role in helping not only their chances to survive but hopefully also give them hope for a brighter future.
Congratulations to all the students that were actively involved in this Campaign particularly the Global Perspectives Students of 2013-15 and to Zoe Kassinis whose original idea it was to “build a school in Africa.” Congratulations also go to all the students who supported the campaign! We are all very proud of this wonderful accomplishment and act of compassion.
Well Done English School Students! We are very proud.
