Its first year as a School club with 15 members from all year groups, the English School Robotics Club participated in this year’s First Lego League Robotics Competition in Limassol on March 31.

After months of preparation, the Club’s team of 9 competed against 18 other teams from around Cyprus and placed third overall and won first prize in the programming challenge.  First Lego League is an annual competition that takes place in over 80 countries with participation by over 250,000 students.  This year’s real-world scientific challenge was ‘hydrodynamics’.  As part of the competition, the team had to program an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing-field and develop a water conservation initiative.  They were evaluated on how well their robot performed, their hydroponic gardening project, their presentation skills and their demonstrated teamwork.

With generous support from ESPA, the Robotics Club was established at The English School in September 2017 and has been meeting weekly since.  For their hydroponics project, the Club received support and donations from a working hydroponic farm in Odou village and were able to raffle off a hydroponics starter kit as part of their information campaign!
