A Concert of Indian Classical Music Tarang Ensemble
On Monday 28th January a group of music students experienced a rare treat - a performance and demonstration by the celebrated Tarang Ensemble.
The celebrated ensemble is in Cyprus under the auspices of the Indian High Commission as part of the celebrations for India’s National Day.
The ensemble demonstrated a fusion of different traditions - best seen in the use of 3 percussion players: tabla from the North Indian tradition, clay drum from the South Indian Hindustani tradition and the western drum kit. The ensemble was completed with the wooden bansuri flute and the fretted string veena. Students were in awe at the skill of the players and took the opportunity to ask questions.
Our thanks to the Indian High Commission for offering us this workshop - it brought the Indian music tradition and fusion to life - an unforgettable experience.
We were joined by students from The Senior School and The American International School in Cyprus alongside our own instrumental teachers.
The Tarang Ensembke will perform at the Shoe Factory as part of the Pharos Arts Foundation series of concerts.
Thanks to Mr Gaurav Vohra, teacher of Indian culture for his assistance, and Ms Pericleous for the photographs.
